HOW I MAKE A SONG
Example with Calibaby
1)

Well, I got an idea : make a song
mixing rap and a good guitar riff with a hip hop beat.
It starts with that, based on E,
going to a G. it sounds good. just got that. I played this riff at my last gig.
2)

I remember that I had this other riff
based on a G from years that sounds really good, better than the last one. and
it s easy to rap on.
Moreover, I can do my human beat box
that I always do during my gigs in live.
It sounds like sublime, sounds like
sun and beach, I can make a song about california.
I also have another riff (that will
be the future bridge) from another song. This riff was A based. I change it to
be a G based riff.
So on this track, I got a verse, and
a chorus : "let me think, about something good" (it will be the bridge of
calibaby finally).
3)

Nothing in relation with number 1)
and 2)
I m writing this song with 2 chords :
a E and a A. I have not a real verse yet but I got a good vocal chorus that talk
about newport beach. I was playing at Coronado and it was pretty cool. so 'come
down to newport beach with me!' I just have this chorus and I sing blablabla on
the "verses" and on the rest of the chorus.
The good thing : I have a good chorus
! and a sentence that sounds great.
4)

Number 3) was pretty good so I write
lyrics for one verse and find 2 other sentences for the chorus : 'you gonna see
how happy you can be'
It's ok but it's so simple.... the
same guitar on the verse and the chorus and it s sleepy.
It s just a 40 secondes funny song.
CONCLUSION :
I have (among 60 riffs, samples and
40 seconde-songs like that) 2 little songs : one with a good chorus talking
about newport beach, another one with a good guitar riff for a verse and a good
chorus talking about california.
So I try to mix all this stuff on a G
base.
And it works!
I transform the chorus of number 2 in
a bridge.
So now I have a long song mixing all
this stuff.
I give up the guitar riff of number
3), it sucks.
5)
I
write fast non sense lyrics on this song. Anyway I met Skye Delamey, she writes
really good lyrics and she is from california, I hope it will be ok for her to
write the verses, and why not changing the lyrics of the bridge and the chorus.
The structure of the song is done :
verse / verse / chorus / verse / bridge / SOLO / chorus / chorus (it s almost
like that anyway...)
6)

Skye did a good job, I got brand new
verses, bridge and chorus.
I change, add and skip a few stuff
and I finally keep the same lyrics for the bridge and the chorus.
Instead of a SOLO I got the idea to
ask K-lien to rap on this part.
7)

The base is here : I got all the
lyrics and the guitar parts. the bass and the beats should be ok with Chris and
Jim (the bass player and the drummer on this album).
I like this 'with you, with me, with
everybody' at the end.
8)

K-lien is done with his lyrics, he
comes to my apartment so we can try his parts on the guitar. I extend his part
of 2 verses to 4 verses. Sounds really good ! The song is ready to be
recorded. By the way I really like K's lyrics.
9)

I go to Jim's studio to record a good
version of just me singing with my guitar so the bassist, K-lien and the drummer
will be able to think about what they gonna do on this song.
I like doing that : it allows us to
be really ready so we don't lose time (and so a lot of money) in the studio.
Number 9) is the bones of the song : all the musicians will record on this
version. We will then erase this guitar and voice to put brand new parts that
sound better.
10)

All the instruments are there.
11)

Just missing ken's parts, general mix
and sound effect
12)

done !
